There are many ways to express creativity in the realm of billboard advertising. Kinetic billboards are a very niche, yet extremely cool type. But what is that? And how does kinetic align with digital signage? Let’s investigate and see the best examples of kinetic billboards ever.

What is a kinetic billboard?

When we say “kinetic” we mean something that is “relating to or resulting from motion.”

But what exactly is a kinetic billboard? It would usually have an added motion factor like moving parts or screens that create an enhanced “wow” effect and get the heads turned.

It’s not a new concept, we’ve seen many examples of kinetic advertising over the years. Still, the approach is relatively uncharted due to its technical requirements. For a billboard to get kinetic, you’ve got to use special screens that can “move” so it’s more expensive than regular digital signage.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do it, the examples in this article show the power of a good kinetic ad. Let’s see some of the coolest kinetic DOOH examples.

1. Coca-Cola’s 3D Robotic Sign on Times Square

Why: go big or go home. Coca-Cola chooses the first option. The beverage company decided to unleash the kinetic advertising possibilities by deploying 1,760 independently moving LED screens to make a point. 68 feet tall and 42 feet wide, this kinetic billboard is a fantastic example of over-the-top advertising. The movement of the screens was synchronized with the digital signage content creating an amazing spectacle of futuristic “dancing” displays. And that’s exactly how you do it. One of the most epic kinetic billboards it is.

2. LG kinetic clock on Times Square

Why: we’re in Times Square again and this time it’s LG flexing its kinetic muscles with a cool “Life’s Good” campaign. The screen is literally moving to the beat of content and you can’t help but stare at this installation and record videos.

While regular digital signage is still the best way to advertise, with kinetic, you’re getting an extra chance to impress your audience.

3. LG’s Public Media Art at ISE 2024 in Barcelona

Why: one of the most interesting exhibits at this year’s ISE in Barcelona was this epic kinetic “sculpture” from LG called Public Media Art. We’ve written about this screen in our blog article about Day 2 at ISE 2024. It’s simply mesmerizing. LG Public Media Art has 800 nit brightness, a Pixel Pitch of 1.95 mm, and HDR compatibility.

We’ve seen it with our own eyes and it’s unbelievable. Quite literally. You’re standing there watching as the blocks move and your brain refuses to process it and thinks it’s some kind of a digital trickery. But it’s not, the screen parts are actually moving and the result is spectacular. That’s an impressive piece of kinetic DOOH.

4. The Pearl by BREAKFAST

Why: officially, the largest kinetic sculpture in the world, The Pearl is a feat of both art and engineering. Created by the Brooklyn-based BREAKFAST, it’s comprised of 3,000 computer-driven kinetic tiles with 45-foot-tall and 53-foot-diameter proportions. Plot twist: it’s a decoration feature of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas thus it doesn’t belong to the land, it belongs to the sea.

According to the artist, “the tiles, arranged in a Fibonacci sequence reminiscent of patterns found in marine life, move with a fluidity that evokes the ocean’s natural rhythms. Intriguingly, several of these movements are influenced by real-time tidal and wind data from the Caribbean, allowing the sculpture to transform in response to its environmental conditions—ranging from serene to vibrant.”

It deserves a place among the best kinetic billboards.

5. The Largest of 3D LED Kinetic Billboards in the World in Seoul

Why: we love 3D billboards, there’s no secret here. We regularly write about the coolest campaigns in this blog. But what we might love even more are the 3D kinetic billboards. When 3D becomes physical.

That’s the case of this awesome LED kinetic screen in Seoul which is the largest in the world. Just look how irresistible the movement looks and how engaging this kind of screen is. That’s definitely a great investment for the frequented public spaces that provide advertisers with additional creative perks.
