Going mega is a trend nowadays. Royal Caribbean's "Icon of the Seas" aka the world's largest cruise ship has unveiled the world's largest kinetic sculpture that will greet visitors on board. Entitled "The Pearl," it's created by Brooklyn-based new media studio BREAKFAST. Here's what it looks like.

What happened: the biggest cruise ship on the globe needs something special inside too. With its 14 meters in height and 5.3 meters in diameter "The Pearl" is a fitting piece. Also, it's the world's largest kinetic sculpture with 3,000 computer-driven kinetic tiles.
Let's take a closer look at its operation.
The installation sports sci-fi looks and can "move" like the ocean waves. All the tiles are controlled by the computer and can be programmed to a certain movement. In other words, it's a masterful application of technology with an art twist.
The structure follows the Fibonacci sequence and, well, looks mesmerizing.
According to BREAKFAST, the sculpture can simulate various natural occurrences "such as rolling waves, gentle breezes, shooting stars, and the dynamic ocean surface."
What's also cool is that the movement is not random. The tiles respond to the real-time tidal and wind data from the Caribbean and recreate them.
It took 4 years to create the installation.
We cannot miss the fact that it's a very engaging piece too. The one you can stare at endlessly, just like the waves it simulates. In other words, a big win for Royal Carribean's brand.
What else: "The Pearl" is not the first time BREAKFAST gets into the kinetic sculpture game. A month ago, the creative studio opened 40-foot "Oceans" at Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
The piece is comprised of 483 motorized elements and seeks to embody "the dynamism of the world’s oceans within the arid landscape of Las Vegas."
Look, it's really amazing:

Kinetic sculpture seems to be a great way for brands to embrace art and take public installations to the next level of engagement. It is interesting to see how this market will develop in the future and whether there will be LED collaborations.
